About the Raritan and Millstone Canal...

The Raritan and Millstone Canal run along side each other through a good strech of central NJ. Fishermen of the Chronicles have fish these waters many times, and have ventured to different parts throughout the state. No matter what town your in, the canal looks identical with sandy bike trails along the banks. Species of fish found here are sunfish, crappies, pickerel, largemouth bass, rock bass, and channel catfish.

On the average trip to the canal, someone, who was ryan(above) in this case, will catch a pickerel. Crappies are much more likely to be caught. If you run into a school of crappie, you could be there a while.

You can pick up the canal at many sections throughout the state, yet they all look the same - A sandy trail deviding the two bodies of water. The last set of photographs were taken in Hillsborough. Other commonly visited spots - RT. 27, Kingston (rock quarry), and Princeton.

Rock Bass

An interesting breed of bass commonly found in the canal. There's no mistake when it comes to identifying one; their extremely bloodshot red eyes are a dead give away.

On a rainy late September afternoon, Kregler and Tom fished the canal off a road in Princeton. It was a very wet outing to say the least, and the fishing was medicore. The drizzle, heavy at times, was very consistant all throughout the afternoon. There were points where we'd hit into a crappy, bass, or sunny or two....but not an extremely active day for the fish. Kregler caught this nice black-eyed bass, having to lift him out of the canal off one of it's steeper shorelines - The dropoff was about 6 feet.
