June 19th, 2002: Island Beach State Park

Island Beach State Park can be a great place to fish, but a 4X4 vehicle is necessary. There are strict guidelines as to the supplies you'll need to drive on the beach - a jack, wood plank, flares, and fire extinguisher to name a few. Once your supplies are checked, you will need to deflate your tires to 15lbs. in order to drive on the beach. Now, you're ready to roll.
This trip started off quickly for Kregler as he hooked a cocktail blue right from the get go. Then, it began to thunder and lighting. Once it started to rain, Jamie, Kregler, and Tom went straight to the Dancing Crab for food and beers.

After the rain let up, it was back to the jetty, which is at the very end of the beach. Below, you can see the Barnaget Lighthouse - Ol' Barney.

Kregler hooked up again with a decent fluke. At nightfall, sand flies start to come out which are much worse than mosquitos. This pretty much chased us out and away from the jetty.

The rest of the trip was spent fishing the tide using clams which produced a sand shark.
November 8th, 2002 : Island Beach State Park
November is a cold month to fish, but it's the best time to catch striped bass. Since stripers migrate in the colder months, they are actively feeding as they head South. In the shot below, you can see we are definitely not alone, as temperatures are in the 30's with the addition of wind chill. IBSP is plagued with fishermen during these months.

On this trip, Tom caught his first striper. Although we had some occasional bites, this was the only one landed.
In 2003, we plan to do more colder weather fishing for stripers as it comes into season.
